I am a simple girl when it comes to makeup! If I was a teenage girl in today’s world I am certain I would be so much more proficient in applying makeup with all the tutorials available online but I grew up without youtube and with a mom who’s makeup routine was blush and red lipstick hence my makeup routine is pretty basic – I am most thankful for mascara and lipgloss and when I really need some fancy stuff I have in the past relied on the expertise of my twenty-year-old daughter but now that she is away at college I don’t have her so easily accessible.
A few months ago I came upon an NY Times article on best drugstore makeup – it got me thinking. Heck, walking into a Rite Aid, Walgreens or Target I have always been amazed at the huge makeup selection but also greatly intimidated. What’s the best brand? How do I pick a shade? Do I want a liquid foundation or powder? What’s the quality? The questions are endless which makes relying on an expert at Sephora, Ulta or department store always seem like an easier route to take though definitely more expensive. I started to do a little research and started to do a little buying and here’s what I found! 🙂
My routine is simple so I haven’t stepped into eyeshadows, highlighters, or lipsticks but I have tested the basics and I have been pleasantly pleased with what I found and my pocketbook is loving the savings.
At my age, a good concealer is a necessity between the under the eye circles and age spots – oh how I hate the age spots! My pick is Maybelline Instant Age Rewind – it uses a sponge applicator which makes it super easy to use. I have used this concealer for over a year, every day even if I am not wearing foundation, I am always wearing concealer.
My biggest fear with drugstore foundation has always been how to ensure I get the right shade to match with my skin! It seemed most drugstore brands came in light to medium shades and how could I possibly make that guess without testing it out?!
Well, L’Oreal True Match comes in 33 shades, from light to dark with numerous undertones so you are bound to find a match for you and I was in Target where they have a beauty consultant and she actually matched a foundation shade for me! I love how lightweight this foundation yet still gives lots of coverage – it smoothes out my skin, softens my lines and still gives me that natural look. And bonus it has SPF!
Without a doubt, my pick is Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer! I had read enough reviews to know this was a good pick. First off, it has a great tropical smell that reminds of vacation but what I really like is how easy it goes on and blends in. I like a natural look and this gives you that sun-kissed look with no orangy or chalky look. I think a Kabuki-style brush is the best way to apply bronzer – it blends in the bronzer evenly on the skin and creates that natural looking coverage.
I don’t have naturally long lush lashes so mascara is the one thing I don’t leave home without putting on and I have been using drugstore brand for years. There are a lot of out there – lengthening, volumizing, waterproof, washable – so it does depend on what you are looking for your lashes.
My pick is Maybelline Pumped Up Colossal Mascara – it gives my lashes volume but it’s also waterproof but washable. It stays on all day but comes off at night when I wash my face – no eye makeup remover . . . bonus!
Finding a mascara that works for you may take few tries at trying out different brands and styles. That may be the case for any drugstore brand makeup you try. It is overwhelming but it is also possible to find good quality make up that will work for your needs at great prices! At least these ones may give you a starting point. 🙂
