Two more days and fall will officially be here. Fall is always such a welcome season after the hot weather. I actually believe every season is welcome when it actually arrives . . . don’t we all love a changeup in the weather?!
I grew up in Connecticut where fall was full of vibrant and beautiful colors! Our weekends were spent raking up leaves in the yard. I remember constantly complaining about that chore that we were all expected to do. The only fun thing was gathering the leaf piles and jumping into them. We lived on 2 acres with woods surrounding us and I remember the sound of the crunching leaves as we hiked through the woods.
I remember collecting the prettiest of those leaves and ironing them between 2 sheets of wax paper. I remember the smell of pulling out the wool sweaters that had spent the summer packed away with mothballs to protect them from moths and mildew in the hot weather.
I remember football being on the tv all weekend long and tossing the ball around with my dad during the halftime.
And I remember apples . . . they became one of our only fruit choices.
Falls in Southern California are slightly different. We have many different varieties of apples as well as many other fruits. My kids never had leaf piles to jump into nor leaves to rake up but we do have a few trees with colorful leaves.
Our mornings and evenings feel chilly to us but not chilly enough that a wool sweater is needed. We still transition into fall clothes and are experts at dressing in layers knowing that a chilly morning often turns into a hot afternoon.
And football is still the universal signal across the country that fall has arrived but out here almost all sports are played year round.
Every season I have a list of things I want to do during that season, a bucket list of sorts, and this year I’m determined to actually make them happen.
Try a New Fitness Class
I love working out at home. I love the flexibility and variety have with streaming my workouts. And I love working out on my schedule which typically means early morning. But I am also in a little rut with my fitness and would like to try out some different classes. My goal is one new class a week and maybe I will find a class I can add into my fitness routine on a weekly basis.
Tomorrow is my first go at trying a new class . . . I’m taking a total body class on a megareformer . . . yikes! I will keep you posted.
Visit santa monica farmers market
There are Farmer’s Markets in so many different neighborhoods including my own but one of my favorites has always been the Santa Monica farmers market on Wednesday or Saturday morning. It’s just with all the family activities it has been years since I have been there.
I am going to make it happen this fall and since I am looking to try some new stew and chili recipes I am certain I will find some great ingredients as well as some goodies.
sample new stew and chili recipes
Nothing says fall more than chili and stew. The house smells so good when they are cooking and who doesn’t love a one pot meal that is true comfort food?!
Start a Book Club
My real goal is to read more. I love to read but I just don’t make time for it except on vacation. I have always wanted to be part of a book club and I think it would give me the accountability to pick up a book at night instead of watching something mindless on tv.
I read some great books on summer vacation but I am looking for some new suggestions. Thank you in advance.
explore some new hikes
There are so many beautiful places to hike in southern California. My husband and I have talked about doing this together plus I am trying to plan more fun dates for us so why not hike together.
I have never been apple picking and there are apple orchards not too far from Los Angeles. This one may not happen but I think it would be a fun little outing and think of all that you could make with those apples!
When we were dating and first married we used to do game nights with our friends. I’ve decided to bring back the game night. This past New Years Eve we ended up doing an impromptu game night and it was so much fun!
We discovered the game Exploding Kitties on a family ski trip which I highly recommend.
Visit the Huntington Gardens and Gamble House
Both of these have been on my bucket list for the last 2 years. The Huntington Library & Gardens is a beautiful mix of gardens including a Desert Garden, the Japanese Garden, the Rose Garden, and the Chinese garden. I took the kids a couple of times when they were little but I’ve wanted to go back with my husband.
The Gamble House in Pasadena, California, I have always been curious about. It is an example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture. The house and furnishings were designed by in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. They have one-hour docent-led tours on Saturday or Sunday.
Attend a Dodger Playoff Baseball Game
I’ve been lucky to attend quite a few Dodger games this season. I hope it is our year and oh how I hope and plan to be there for at least one playoff game. Nothing says fall like a baseball world series game. Go Dodgers!
Time to get busy as we welcome in a new season!
What’s on your fall bucket list this year? And let me know if you want to be part of a book club.
