Spring feels very far off these days even here in Southern California where it is just a little bit too cold for this East Coast transplant. Luckily spring will be here soon and even now I find myself already transitioning to brighter colors and thinking about t-shirts, shorts, sandals and white denim.
I think spring is a hard season for knowing what to wear. The weather changes can be fast – one day it’s 75, the next day it’s 55 and rainy. Even throughout the day, we can experience big swings in temperature! And just when you thought/hoped the warm weather was here to stay the cold rolls in for one last gasp or if you are here in Southern California the fog rolls in!
I thought I would share my spring closet essentials . . . the basics for your closet that you can mix and match with other items in you may have that will take you right through the spring into summer.
My number one has to be sweater because spring is the season to always carry a sweater at all times even on the days you think you will never need it . . . trust me you will need it.
Cardigans are awesome because of they go on easy on and they come off easy plus they can add a bit of style to even the most casual outfit like jeans and t-shirt. The key is to be able to roll one up and fit it nicely in your purse so you are always prepared. One neutral and one black are essential and then feel free to add fun colors or stripes.
I love jeans, I wear them all the time and if the truth be known I probably have to many but than again maybe one can never have to many because really not all jeans are alike . . . there are jeggings, boyfriend, straight leg, high waisted, mid-rise, cropped, flared, dark wash, faded, distressed, colored denim . . . so many to choose from!!
Here’s the thing you really only need a good dark/mid-rinse skinny, a boyfriend and because we are talking spring essentials a good pair of white jeans.
Dark to Mid rinse Skinny Jean:
You can dress up or dress down skinny jeans with sneakers or heels, t-shirt or silky tunic, add a blazer for work or a long flowy cardigan to go out to the movies. Cuff them up and now you have cropped jeans and they look adorable with flip-flops or flats.
Perfect for the weekend with t-shirt and sweatshirt and a pair of sneakers. OR it’s fun to wear boyfriends with fun, flowy blouse and heels for a night out. These tend to run a little larger and our looser fit so wear something more fitted on top.
White jeans are so much fun for spring and summer! My favorite look is pairing white jeans with a black blazer and white tee or chambray shirt! White jeans look great with everything and you can wear them right into the fall and winter . . . white is not just for summer anymore!
3. White T-shirt
Without a doubt, a couple good white t-shirts are a must in any closet. A white t-shirt goes with everything but finding that perfect white tee can be difficult – v-neck vs. crew neck, fitted vs. slub (a looser fitting t-shirt) and of course, one that isn’t see through. I think one v-neck and one crew neck are essential to your spring/summer wardrobe and then branch out into a variety of colors – black, gray, pink, navy . . . have fun with them! 🙂
4. Striped long sleeve
Clean, crisp, fresh . . . . a good white/navy or white/black strip t-shirt shouts! I love stripes with denim, white jeans, or cut-offs! My favorite:
5. Black Dress
Everyone needs an LBD but what we really need is a black dress that can be dressed up or down. A simple swing dress is one of the best picks! A long sleeve or sleeveless option can be dressed up with a pair of heels or throw a jean jacket and sneakers for running errands on a weekend afternoon. Plus they are great for travel!
6. Non-jean pants
Jeans are great but we can’t wear them everywhere (almost everywhere). A pair of ankle pixie pants is a great option for work or pair with heels for a fun night out. They look great with a silk top, button down or tee-shirt and cardigan or blazer. For the spring choose a light/neutral color (not black) that can take you into the summer.
7. Chambray shirt
A chambray shirt looks great with white denim, the pixie pants above, leggings or shorts in the summer and it can even be that extra layer over a tank top or t-shirt.
8. Denim Jacket and Blazer
Springtime dressing is all about layers! A jean jacket is so essential . . . you can throw it on over pretty much anything and it looks great. I have light wash one but I am really partial to a darker wash because you will find you will wear it pretty much year round.
Blazers are so much fun to wear and there is nothing more classic than a blazer over a t-shirt and pair of jeans. And you can wear a blazer into the summer even with shorts – it looks so cute. I recommend a basic black one and you will get a ton of wear out of it.
8. White sneakers
A white pair of sneakers is an essential part of any spring and summer wardrobe! They look clean and fresh with jeans, they take a dress and make it fun and casual, they look adorable with a pair of leggings and a t-shirt. And the good news is there are so many cute sneakers on the market that your style can come out! 🙂
9. Lightweight Scarf
This is a super easy way to add something into your look is with a lightweight scarf – one you can wear now through the spring.
Here are some picks:
10. Peep-toe style boots
These are an awesome transitional shoe that you can easily wear right into the summer. These booties are super cute and look great with dresses, skinny or boyfriend jeans – really anything.
This is just the start . . . once you have the essentials than its fun to add color, fun accessories and even a few trendy items!
